Description

Jean-Pierre Jabouille and the Renault turbo programme occupy a unique place in Formula 1 history — the Frenchman having driven the first turbocharged car to win a Grand Prix when he took victory at the 1979 French GP at Dijon, a watershed moment that began the sport’s turbocharged era in earnest. The 1980 Austrian Grand Prix at the Österreichring brought Jabouille and the RE20 another victory, the 1.5-litre turbocharged V6 demonstrating once again the power advantage that Renault’s engineers had unlocked and that the naturally aspirated opposition had yet to fully answer. The Österreichring’s long, fast sweeps were precisely the kind of circuit that rewarded the turbo’s top-end power delivery.

The RE20 was central to the years during which turbocharged power transformed Formula 1 from a discipline of mechanical sophistication and driver talent into an arms race of boost pressure and intercooling technology. Jabouille — whose career was curtailed by serious injuries at the 1980 Canadian GP later that season — was the driver most closely associated with Renault’s pioneering turbo effort, and his Austrian victory represents one of the high points of that campaign. Spark’s 1:18 resin model captures the winning No. 15 RE20 at approximately 25cm in length, presented with display base and display case. Officially licensed.
