Description

The Alpine A110’s record at the Monte Carlo Rally is among the most storied in the event’s history — a car whose combination of featherlight construction, agile rear-engined handling, and well-developed 1600cc engine made it particularly well-suited to the mixed-surface mountain stages that define the Monte. Jean-Pierre Nicolas was one of the most committed French rally drivers of his generation, a development-era Alpine works driver who brought technical feedback and competitive instinct to a programme that would culminate in the A110’s sweep of the inaugural World Rally Championship season in 1973.

The 1600S variant was the most potent incarnation of the A110 in period competition — the enlarged engine giving it the outright performance to challenge the best machinery from Lancia, Ford, and Porsche on the demanding roads above Monaco. Nicolas’s No. 23 appearance at the 1972 Monte Carlo Rally was part of Alpine’s concerted championship assault, the team fielding multiple cars in pursuit of the outright victories that would define the A110’s legend.
