Description

Volvo’s entry into the British Touring Car Championship in the mid-1990s produced one of motorsport’s most unexpected and memorable stories — a manufacturer known for safety and practicality choosing one of the world’s most competitive touring car series as its proving ground. The Volvo 850, prepared by Tom Walkinshaw Racing, was a genuinely quick car despite the apparent improbability of the combination, and by 1995 the programme was competitive enough to challenge for top results on a consistent basis. Rickard Rydell, the Swedish driver who would go on to win the BTCC championship with Volvo in 1998, was among the team’s key drivers in a season that demonstrated the full seriousness of the Gothenburg manufacturer’s motorsport ambitions.
