Description

The Mercedes-Benz W116 was the car that introduced the S-Class name to the world — a flagship saloon whose combination of engineering substance, interior refinement, and passive safety innovation set the benchmark for luxury motoring through the 1970s. The 350 SEL, the long-wheelbase variant of the 350 SE, added rear passenger space and a presence that befitted heads of state and senior executives in equal measure, its extended roofline and additional wheelbase giving the rear cabin an unhurried, authoritative quality that defined the concept of the prestige saloon car for a generation. The 3.5-litre V8 delivered its power with the smoothness and refinement that Mercedes had made a signature of the model range.

The 1979 350 SEL represents the final year of the W116 before the W126 S-Class took over — a car at the maturity of its development, every aspect of its character well understood and finely balanced.
