Description
When the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was unveiled at the New York International Motor Sports Show in February 1954, it caused a sensation. Developed from the W194 racing car that won Le Mans and the Carrera Panamericana in 1952, the production W198 was the fastest road car of its day. Its famous gullwing doors were an engineering necessity rather than a styling flourish: the lightweight tubular spaceframe ran so high along the sills that conventional doors were impossible. Under the long bonnet sat a 3.0-litre straight-six with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, a world first for a production car, good for more than 160mph.
Only around 1,400 Gullwing coupés were built between 1954 and 1957, and many left Stuttgart in this classic silver, often paired with a beige interior – the combination Norev has chosen here. At around 25cm long, the model captures the louvred wings, eyebrowed wheel arches and chrome detailing of the original, with opening gullwing doors, bonnet and boot to show off the cabin and engine bay, plus working suspension.
