Description

The 1988 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka is one of the most significant races in Formula 1 history — the afternoon that decided the World Championship between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, two team-mates in the utterly dominant McLaren MP4/4 whose rivalry had defined the entire season. Prost led the race in the No. 11 car, only to be overtaken by Senna on a recovery drive of extraordinary brilliance after the Brazilian had stalled at the start and fallen to the back of the field. Senna’s victory and Prost’s second place handed the championship to Senna, bringing the curtain down on one of the most intense intra-team title battles the sport has ever produced.

The MP4/4 itself was the most dominant Formula 1 car of its era — the Honda-powered McLaren that won 15 of the 16 races in the 1988 season and produced two drivers capable of fighting for the championship at every round. Prost’s No. 11 at Suzuka captures a pivotal moment in the sport’s greatest rivalry. Mini GT’s 1:64 diecast model reproduces the car at approximately 8cm in length with rollable wheels.
