Description

The 1997 European Grand Prix at Jerez is remembered above all for the collision between Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve that decided the World Championship — but for Mika Häkkinen, that afternoon in southern Spain had an entirely different and deeply personal significance. Crossing the finishing line first in his McLaren Mercedes MP4/12, Häkkinen took his maiden Formula 1 Grand Prix victory — the breakthrough moment that had eluded him through years of devastating near-misses and a near-fatal accident at the 1995 Australian Grand Prix that had almost ended his career altogether.

Team-mate David Coulthard completed a McLaren one-two, but the afternoon belonged to Häkkinen — a driver of exceptional talent who had waited longer than almost anyone could have imagined for his first win. It was the launchpad for the following season’s dominant world championship campaign, and in hindsight the moment at which Häkkinen announced himself as the driver who would define the final years of the 1990s in Formula 1.
