Description

Olivier Gendebien and Phil Hill’s victory at the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans in the Ferrari 330 TRI/LM was the conclusion of one of the greatest driver partnerships in endurance racing history. Gendebien, the precise and measured Belgian, and Hill, the first American Formula 1 World Champion, had won at Le Mans together in 1958, 1961, and now 1962 — a sequence that made Gendebien a four-time Le Mans winner and established the partnership as the defining combination of the Ferrari sports car programme’s most successful era. The 330 TRI/LM itself was a one-off creation, built specifically for the 1962 race around a 4.0-litre V12 engine — the most powerful configuration Ferrari had prepared for Le Mans — and the TRI chassis that had already proven its pace and durability.

The No. 6 Ferrari crossing the finish line at the Circuit de la Sarthe as the overall winner in 1962 was, as it turned out, the conclusion of both Hill and Gendebien’s Le Mans careers together — a perfect ending to a partnership defined by its intelligence, its consistency, and its refusal to take unnecessary risks in races that rewarded patience above all else.
