Vehicle Background

In the early 1970s, Porsche aimed to bolster its presence in motorsport, particularly in the Group 4 GT racing category. To achieve this, they needed to produce a road-legal version of their race car to meet homologation requirements. Thus, the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS was conceived, blending track-bred performance with road-going usability.

The “2.7” in its name refers to the displacement of its engine, a larger and more powerful version of the flat-six engine than what was previously offered. The “RS” designation stands for Rennsport, which translates to “racing sport” in German, signifying its strong racing pedigree.
