Colin Chapman's Lotus in Scale
Colin Chapman founded Lotus Engineering in 1952, and Team Lotus followed in 1954. The team won seven Formula 1 constructors' titles between 1963 and 1978 and six drivers' titles for Jim Clark (1963 and 1965), Graham Hill (1968), Jochen Rindt (1970), Emerson Fittipaldi (1972) and Mario Andretti (1978). Lotus racing cars are also listed among our F1 models and historic race cars. Our scale guide explains how big each scale is.
Lotus F1 Models: Clark, Hill and the 1960s
Spark covers the early years in 1:43 resin. Its Lotus 21 range includes Jim Clark's car from the 1961 Dutch GP and Stirling Moss's 1961 Italian GP entry. Ireland gave the works team its first World Championship win in a Lotus 21 at the 1961 US Grand Prix. The Lotus 49, with its Cosworth DFV engine used as a stressed part of the chassis, won first time out at the 1967 Dutch GP with Clark, and Spark makes Graham Hill's 49 from the 1968 Race of Champions and Giancarlo Baghetti's 1967 Italian GP car. In 1:18, Tecnomodel produces resin limited editions of the spaceframe Lotus 24, including Jim Clark's car from the 1962 Aintree 200, where he won from pole and set fastest lap.
Rindt, Andretti and Senna
Jochen Rindt's 1970 Lotus 72C, from the season he became the only posthumous world champion, is made as a 1:24 diecast by Premium Collectibles. GP Replicas makes Mario Andretti's Lotus 77 from the 1976 Brazilian GP, the car's debut race, in 1:18 with a driver figure. For Ayrton Senna, Werk83 makes the 1:18 Lotus 97T from his pole position at Monaco in 1985, and Minichamps offers the 1986 98T and the 1987 Monaco-winning 99T in 1:18 weathered "dirty" versions. That Monaco win was the first Grand Prix victory for a car with active suspension, and Mini GT makes the same 99T in 1:64. Tecnomodel adds Nelson Piquet's 1988 British GP Lotus 100T.
Lotus Road and Rally Cars
The Esprit was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and entered production in 1976. KK Scale makes the 1981 Esprit Turbo in black and gold and the Essex Turbo in blue metallic as sealed 1:18 diecast models. The real Turbo is 4,320mm long, so the model measures about 24cm. The Essex edition was created for Essex Overseas Petroleum Corporation. AUTOart makes the 1:18 Europa Special as the car of Yuya Fubuki from the Circuit Wolf manga, which ran from 1975 to 1979. MCG adds the 1:18 Ford Lotus Cortina Mk.1 in which Bengt Söderström and Gunnar Palm won the 1966 RAC Rally.
