REMEMBERING THE FERRARI 642 DURING THE 1991 F1 SEASON

The Ferrari 642, also known as the F1-91, was Scuderia Ferrari’s contender for the 1991 Formula One season, driven by Alain Prost and Jean Alesi. Designed by Steve Nichols and Jean-Claude Migeot, it was an evolution of the 641 chassis that had challenged for the championship in 1990. Powered by a 3.5-litre V12 engine producing around 710 horsepower, the 642 aimed to secure Ferrari’s first drivers’ title since 1979. However, despite high expectations, the car struggled with inconsistent handling and was replaced by the Ferrari 643 mid-season after the Mexican Grand Prix. The 642 competed in six races, achieving two podiums but no victories, contributing to Ferrari’s third-place finish in the constructors’ championship with 55.5 points, 39.5 of which came from the 643.

Jean Alesi, the young French driver with Italian heritage, was a fan favourite in 1991, bringing flair to Ferrari’s campaign. At the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Alesi’s race ended prematurely due to a retirement, reflecting the 642’s reliability issues. Similarly, at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, Alesi faced another disappointment, retiring from the race. Despite these setbacks, Alesi shone in other races, notably securing a third-place podium at Monaco and setting the fastest lap in Phoenix, showcasing his talent and the car’s potential on its day. His aggressive driving style endeared him to fans, though the 642’s limitations often hindered his results.

Alain Prost, Ferrari’s lead driver, experienced mixed fortunes with the 642. At the Imola Grand Prix (San Marino), Prost’s race ended before it began, as he spun off on the wet reconnaissance lap, unable to start. This incident highlighted the car’s tricky handling in adverse conditions. However, at the Monaco Grand Prix, Prost delivered a strong performance, finishing fifth and setting the fastest lap, a testament to his skill in navigating the 642’s challenges. His best result with the 642 came at the season-opening United States Grand Prix in Phoenix, where he clinched second place, marking the car’s high point. Internal team tensions and the 642’s inconsistency, however, curtailed Prost’s championship hopes.
