Overview

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the flagship performance model of the 718 Cayman range, introduced in 2021 as the most extreme, track-focused version of Porsche’s mid-engined sports car. Developed by Porsche’s GT division, the GT4 RS transforms the already capable Cayman GT4 into a car designed for uncompromising driving dynamics and circuit performance.

This model is widely seen as the ultimate expression of the Cayman platform, featuring a naturally aspirated flat-six engine derived from the 911 GT3, enhanced aerodynamics, and extensive weight-saving measures.

Performance

At its heart, the GT4 RS is powered by a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine, taken directly from the Porsche 911 GT3. It produces 500 PS (493 bhp) and 450 Nm of torque, revving up to an astonishing 9,000 rpm.

The engine is paired exclusively with a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, chosen for its lightning-fast shifts and ability to maximise track performance.

Performance figures include:

  • 0–100 km/h in 3.4 seconds
  • Top speed of 315 km/h (196 mph)

The sound of the flat-six, amplified by new air intakes positioned directly behind the driver and passenger, has become one of the GT4 RS’s most defining and celebrated features.

Design

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS adopts numerous motorsport-inspired elements that set it apart visually and aerodynamically from the standard GT4:

  • Aerodynamics: A large swan-neck rear wing, redesigned front bumper with air vents, and an aggressive rear diffuser combine to increase downforce and improve stability at high speed.
  • Bodywork: Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used for components such as the bonnet and wings, cutting weight and lowering the car’s centre of gravity.
  • Interior: Alcantara-like Race-Tex, lightweight door pulls, and carbon trim create a track-focused environment. Bucket seats are fitted as standard, with additional lightweight options available.

The overall result is a car that looks unmistakably more extreme than the GT4, while serving a direct purpose in terms of performance.

Driving Technology

The GT4 RS benefits from Porsche’s expertise in motorsport engineering:

  • Chassis & Suspension: Adjustable track-focused suspension with lowered ride height, ball-jointed suspension mounts, and RS-specific tuning.
  • Brakes: Large cross-drilled performance brakes, with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) available as an option.
  • Tyres: Track-optimised Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres enhance grip and precision.

These technologies make the GT4 RS not only faster on the straights but sharper and more stable through corners compared with the regular GT4.

Track Achievements

The Cayman GT4 RS has been tested extensively on track and proved its credentials with record lap times. Most notably, it lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:09.3 minutes, nearly 24 seconds quicker than the standard Cayman GT4 — a testament to its enhanced aerodynamics, power, and chassis.

This performance places it in the same league as much more expensive supercars, reinforcing its reputation as one of the best driver’s cars Porsche has ever made.

Place in the Porsche Range

The 718 Cayman GT4 RS sits at the very top of the 718 line-up, above the Cayman GT4 and Boxster Spyder. It represents the most hardcore, track-oriented interpretation of Porsche’s mid-engined sports car before the platform transitions into electrification.

By using the GT3 engine in a Cayman for the first time, Porsche gave enthusiasts the opportunity to experience a level of performance previously reserved for its 911 range. The GT4 RS is therefore both a milestone in the Cayman’s history and a collector’s piece for Porsche fans.
