The Porsche 908/02 Spyder was the open-top evolution of the 908, built for the 1969 World Sportscar Championship. An aluminium spaceframe and fibreglass body kept weight to around 600 kg, and the 3.0-litre air-cooled flat-eight produced about 350 bhp at 8,500 rpm through a five-speed gearbox. By mid-season the works cars ran the high-sided short-tail body that had first appeared at the Nürburgring 1000 km, and Porsche had already secured the manufacturers’ title before the series reached North America.
At the Watkins Glen 6 Hours in July 1969, Jo Siffert put the No.1 car, entered under the Porsche of Austria (Porsche Salzburg) banner, on pole with a lap of 1:08.47. He and Brian Redman then led from start to finish, through a rain shower in the early laps, to win ahead of the Elford/Attwood and Buzzetta/Lins 908s for a Porsche one-two-three. The leading three cars ran the whole race on one set of Dunlop tyres. It was another win for the Siffert and Redman partnership, which had already won at Monza, Spa and the Nürburgring that season.
