The Porsche 917/20 was an experiment in combining the low drag of the long-tail 917 with the stability of the short-tail 917K. Developed with the French aerodynamics consultancy SERA, it featured enormously wide bodywork with deeply enclosed wheels, around 2.2 metres across, and a 4.9-litre flat-12 producing some 600bhp. Its shape later earned it the nickname “Pink Pig” when it raced in butcher’s-chart livery at the 24 Hours in June.
Its first outing came at the Le Mans test weekend on 17 and 18 April 1971, when chassis 001 arrived in plain white having never turned a wheel in anger. After set-up changes and an engine swap it started the Sunday three-hour race, added by the organisers to draw spectators, from pole position. Willi Kauhsen took the lead immediately, and after Gijs van Lennep took over the car had lapped the entire field within about 90 minutes. Some fifteen minutes later the 917/20 cut out at Arnage and could not be restarted, handing victory to the Porsche 908/02 of Claude Ballot-Léna and Guy Chasseuil.
WERK83 has captured this rarely modelled first appearance of the 917/20, in its white test-weekend form as No.20, in 1:18 scale at approximately 22cm long.
