The Porsche 917/20 was a one-off, built for the 1971 Le Mans 24 Hours to combine the low drag of the long-tail 917 LH with the stability of the short-tail 917K. Its body, developed with the French aerodynamic specialists SERA, was considerably wider than a standard 917, with a short nose, a deep concave tail and enclosed wheel openings. Underneath was the familiar 4.9-litre flat-12, producing around 600 bhp at 8,300 rpm in a car weighing about 813 kg. Its bulky shape prompted the famous pink paint scheme marked out like a butcher’s chart, earning the nickname “Pink Pig” or “Der Trüffel Jäger von Zuffenhausen”.
The car is modelled here as it appeared in practice and qualifying, when it already wore the pink finish and dotted butcher’s lines but not yet the decals naming the cuts of meat, which were added for the race. Entered by Martini Racing for Willi Kauhsen and Reinhold Joest, it qualified seventh with a 3:21, a little over two seconds off the pole. In the race the pair ran as high as third by the seventh hour, but on lap 184, while running fifth in the early hours of Sunday, Joest lost the brakes approaching Arnage and hit the barrier, ending the car’s only race. The 917/20 is preserved in the Porsche Museum.
