Audi entered the SCCA Trans-Am Series in 1988 with the 200 quattro, run by Bob Tullius’s Group 44 organisation. The cars began as production Audi 200 saloons, converted under Dieter Basche with a roll cage, reshaped bodywork for downforce, a turbocharged 2.1-litre five-cylinder engine producing around 510 bhp and a six-speed gearbox driving all four wheels. Against V8-powered Camaros, Mustangs and Cutlasses, the four-wheel-drive Audi won eight of the season’s thirteen rounds and took both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships.
Hurley Haywood drove the No.44 car all season. At the Grand Prix of Dallas on 1 May 1988, a 105-lap race on the tight 1.3-mile Fair Park street circuit, team-mate Walter Röhrl took pole, but contact with a backmarker damaged his suspension. Haywood, who qualified fourth, took the lead by lap 53 and won by around 45 seconds, also setting the fastest lap. It was Audi’s first Trans-Am victory and the first for a four-wheel-drive car in the series. Haywood won again at Detroit and, with consistent podium finishes, claimed the title with 151.5 points ahead of Irv Hoerr.
