The Zakspeed Ford Capri Turbo is one of the defining silhouettes of the Group 5 era. Built by Erich Zakowski’s team for Ford, it clothed a lightweight racing structure in wildly extended Capri bodywork, with a Cosworth BDA-based 1,427cc four-cylinder engine boosted by twin KKK turbochargers to around 380bhp in its first form. The small capacity placed it in the under-two-litre Division 2 of the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft, against BMW’s turbocharged 320s.
The car arrived midway through the 1978 season in the black, yellow and red colours of Berlin distiller Mampe, with Hans Heyer at the wheel of chassis 001/78. Heyer put it on pole on its debut at Hockenheim and dominated until a technical failure intervened, and the early unreliability cost him further results despite more pole positions. At the season finale at the Nürburgring it all came together, and Heyer scored Zakspeed’s first Capri Turbo victory. It was the prelude to 1979, when the Capris won nine of fourteen races.
WERK83’s award-winning 1:18 replica of Heyer’s No.52 measures approximately 28cm long and features opening doors, turning front wheels and an authentic cockpit replica. It was named “Modelcar of the Year” (Category J, Classic 1:18) and “Supermodel of the Year” by the German trade magazine MODELLFAHRZEUG.
