Audi’s 1989 assault on the IMSA GTO class produced one of the most formidable touring silhouettes ever built. Beneath carbon-fibre bodywork that kept only the outline of the Audi 90 sat a purpose-built racing car, driven through all four wheels by quattro and powered by a 2.2-litre turbocharged five-cylinder producing around 720bhp. The car won seven of the thirteen races it contested in its single IMSA season.
At Watkins Glen on 24 September 1989, the Kodak Copier 500 was an Audi demonstration. Hans-Joachim Stuck, joined by double World Rally Champion Walter Röhrl, took the No.4 car to victory after 92 laps and just under three hours of racing, 20.4 seconds clear of Hurley Haywood in the sister No.5 Audi; the best of the opposition, Steve Millen’s Nissan 300ZX Turbo, was a lap down in third. Stuck finished the year third in the drivers’ standings and Audi second among the manufacturers.
WERK83 has recreated the Watkins Glen-winning No.4 in 1:18 scale, approximately 25cm long, with turning front wheels. The model was voted “Modelcar of the Year 2024” (Category J, Classic 1:18) by the German trade magazine MODELLFAHRZEUG.
