The R26 marks Audi’s first works Formula 1 car, developed at the Sauber facility in Hinwil under the new technical regulations introduced for 2026. The car is built around a 1.6-litre V6 turbo-hybrid power unit assembled at Audi’s Neuburg motorsport base, paired with a significantly increased electrical deployment and active aerodynamics. The chassis follows the lighter, more agile dimensions mandated by the FIA for the new era, with a shorter wheelbase and narrower bodywork compared to the previous generation. The project represents the culmination of Audi’s multi-year acquisition of the Sauber operation and its ambition to compete at the front of the grid as a full constructor.

At the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, the opening round of the 2026 World Championship, the R26 lined up against fellow new-regulation cars from Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull, Aston Martin, Williams, Alpine, Cadillac and Racing Bulls. Albert Park’s mix of fast street-circuit corners and heavy braking zones provided an early read on the car’s balance and energy-recovery behaviour under race conditions.
