The FW48 is Williams’ first car built to the sweeping 2026 Formula 1 technical regulations, which introduce a lighter and more nimble chassis, active aerodynamics and a new generation power unit running on fully sustainable fuel with a markedly larger share of electrical energy. Developed under the team’s ongoing rebuild led by James Vowles, the chassis pairs Mercedes power with revised cooling architecture and a tighter rear end to suit the new floor and front wing rules. Williams enter the season as a long-established constructor with nine Drivers’ titles and nine Constructors’ titles in their history, looking to convert recent infrastructure investment into competitive results. The FW48 represents a clean-sheet design rather than an evolution, marking a clear break from the ground-effect cars of 2022 to 2025.

At the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix, the FW48 raced at the Suzuka circuit, contesting the iconic figure-of-eight layout against the rest of the 2026 grid in one of the most technically demanding rounds of the calendar. The event is part of the first season under the revised regulations, and grid order across the field was still settling as teams adapted to the new aero and power unit balance. Albon carried car No.23 for Williams as their lead driver during the campaign.
