A Brief History of the Rolls Royce Silver Cloud

The Rolls‑Royce Silver Cloud DHC, produced between 1960 and 1962, belongs to the much‑revered Silver Cloud II series. Introduced in 1959, the Silver Cloud II boasted a powerful 6.2‑litre V8 engine, a substantial upgrade from its predecessor, lifting the top speed and enhancing acceleration and torque – though some contemporaries noted it was marginally less smooth than the preceding straight‑six model.

While official factory records of specific body colours for the Drophead Coupé are scarce, the model became available in a palette befitting its stately presence. Ivory yellow (often referred to simply as ivory or shell ivory) was a popular choice, lending the car a soft, luminous appearance that beautifully highlighted its graceful curves. Collector enthusiasm is evident—as seen with die‑cast models produced in shell ivory to reflect the classic 1960–1962 finish.

By contrast, red made for a bold and dramatic statement, with at least one immaculate 1960 Silver Cloud II in a deep, original red finish attracting attention as “highly original” among collectors. This fiery hue emphasised the sweeping Coach‑built lines of the DHC body, especially when paired with polished chrome detailing and a matching hood or trim.

Of course, shell grey provided a more subdued, refined aesthetic. One distinguished restoration of a Mulliner‑bodied Silver Cloud II DHC returned the car to its original shell grey metallic paint, complemented by exquisite hand‑painted red pin‑stripes, presenting a subtler interplay of elegance and attention to detail
