Description
Long Beach’s street circuit was the kind of stage that brought out the very best in Gilles Villeneuve. Narrow, unforgiving, and demanding absolute commitment from the first lap to the last, the United States Grand Prix West rewarded exactly the qualities that defined him — bravery, precision under pressure, and an instinctive relationship with the barrier-lined walls that other drivers simply could not replicate. The 1981 race was one of the early season events in which Ferrari’s 126CX — the twin-turbocharged 1.5-litre V6 car that represented Ferrari’s bold step into the turbo era — was still finding its feet as a race-winning package.
That Villeneuve was able to extract the performances he did from a car of such raw, demanding character remains a testament to his genius. Long Beach 1981 is part of the story of a season in which he carried Ferrari’s turbocharged future on his shoulders with a smile and a fearlessness that made him one of the most beloved figures the sport has ever seen.
