About the Mercedes-AMG Black Series

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, a name that resonates with power and precision, stands as the epitome of Mercedes-Benz’s engineering prowess and dedication to performance. This vehicle is not merely a car; it’s a statement, a testament to what happens when German engineering meets unrestrained passion for speed and control.

Unveiled in 2020, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is the sixth addition to the AMG GT family and arguably the most extreme. It draws its lineage from a distinguished line of Black Series models, which are known for their track-focused enhancements and limited production runs. Each iteration of the Black Series represents the pinnacle of AMG’s capabilities, offering a blend of performance, exclusivity, and technological innovation.

The GT Black Series takes inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car, infusing race-bred technology into a road-legal package. This model’s development was led by AMG’s top engineers and drivers, ensuring that every component serves a purpose and contributes to the car’s ultimate goal: delivering an unparalleled driving experience.

Technical Facts

At the heart of the GT Black Series lies a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, which has been meticulously re-engineered to produce a staggering 730 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. This makes it the most powerful AMG V8 engine ever made for a road car. The modifications include a flat-plane crankshaft, new camshafts, and a larger intercooler, all of which contribute to a higher redline and improved throttle response.

The car’s performance figures are as impressive as its engine specifications. It can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 325 km/h. Such blistering speed is complemented by an advanced aerodynamics package, featuring a massive front splitter, an adjustable rear wing, and a prominent rear diffuser, all designed to keep the car glued to the road at high speeds.

The chassis of the GT Black Series is equally sophisticated. It boasts a fully adjustable coil-over suspension with electronically controlled adaptive damping, allowing drivers to fine-tune the car’s handling characteristics. The lightweight construction, with extensive use of carbon fibre in the bonnet, roof, and rear hatch, helps keep the car’s weight to a minimum, enhancing both agility and performance.

Interesting Information

One of the most striking aspects of the GT Black Series is its aerodynamics. The active aerodynamics system, borrowed from the world of motorsport, includes a front splitter that can be manually adjusted and a rear wing with two levels of adjustment, controlled either manually or automatically depending on the driving conditions. This system ensures optimal downforce and minimal drag, making the car exceptionally stable even at its top speed.

The interior of the GT Black Series reflects its racing pedigree. It features lightweight sports seats, extensive use of Alcantara, and a roll cage option for those who plan to take their car to the track. Despite its hardcore nature, the car does not compromise on luxury, offering amenities such as a high-end audio system and advanced infotainment options.

Formula 1 Safety Car

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series also has a notable presence in Formula 1, serving as the official safety car for the 2021 season. This role requires a vehicle that can perform under extreme conditions, maintaining high speeds to keep the F1 cars’ tyres and brakes at optimal temperatures during caution periods. The GT Black Series, with its formidable power and stability, is perfectly suited for this demanding task.

In its safety car guise, the GT Black Series is equipped with additional safety and communication equipment, including a roof-mounted light bar and a high-tech communication system to stay in constant contact with race control. The car’s striking livery and flashing lights make it easily recognisable on the track, underscoring its vital role in maintaining safety during races.
